Getting to/from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE)

Several bus companies run the route (average fare NT125, 60 min) every 15 min from the airport to the main train station in Taipei from 4am to midnight. Some buses also go to the domestic airport, Songshan. You can buy bus tickets in the arrival areas of both terminals. Look for the ‘Express Bus’ signs in Terminal 2 and ‘Bus Stop’ (Station) signs in Terminal 1. If you want to get dropped off at a particular hotel let the staff at the ticket counters know, as there are different routes.

Buses also connect with the High-Speed Rail (HSR) station in Taoyuan, which can then whiz you off to Taipei in 25 minutes. From Taipei to Taoyuan station the HSR fare is NT160. From the airport to the station by bus costs NT20. Buses run every 20 minutes. However, because trains were not that frequent at the time of writing, this was not the best way to travel to Taipei except during rush hour when buses were slowed by traffic.

Electricity

Taiwan uses electric current of 110 volts at 60 cycles, appliances from Europe, Australia or South-East Asia will need an adaptor or transformer. Many buildings have sockets with 220 volts especially for the use of air conditioners.

110V AC, same as US ; two-pin flat plugs

The best and most economical way to get to Taipei from Taoyuan airport is by bus.  There are many Airport buses that take you to the Taipei main station, with drop off points along the route at major hotels and MRT (metro) stations.

Some bus options from Taipei airport.

Toward You Air Bus: This route takes longer to get from airport to downtown, as it makes many stops. Buses are not very well kept, dusty inside, greasy head rest area, dirty floor, and seats are cramped with very limited leg room (smaller than airlines economy class).

Taiwan Bus Corp. (Kuokuang): Friendly bus driver, new and clean bus and wide seats with plenty of legroom.  Ticket price is TWD125.

Take the KuoKuang bus if your hotel is in the vicinities of Zhongshan, Taipei Main Station/HSR Terminal and Ximending.

CitiAir Bus (DaYou): Take this bus if your hotel is near Taipei City Hall or Taipei 101 in the Xinyi Disrict (such as Grand Hyatt, Le Meridien, W Hotel, Agora Garden, Tango Xinyi), or in the Da'an vicinity (such as Far Eastern Plaza, Howard Plaza). Ticket price is TWD145. Be prepared to load and unload your luggage yourself.

Evergreen Bus: This bus service is run by EVA Air and shuttles between Taoyuan, Nanjing East MRT, Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT and Evergreen Hotel. Ticket price is TWD150 but the comfortable ride and friendly service more than makes up for the marginally higher ticket price.

Freego Bus: Take this bus if your hotel is in the vicinities of Zhongxiao Fuxing and Nanjing East/Taipei Arena, such as San Want Hotel and Sunworld Dynasty Hotel. Ticket price is TWD140.

By High Speed Rail (HSR)

The airport is very close to the HSR station.  You can catch a 5-minute shuttle from eith airport terminals (green Ubus)  to the HSR station.  Buses run every 10-15 minutes from 7:00 am to 23:45 at night.

Once at the HSR station, buy a ticket to Taipei.  The HSR will stop at the Taipei Main Station, where you can connect with the MRT (metro).

By Taxi

Unless you are arriving very late at night, or have a lot of luggage, there is no real reason to catch a Taxi.  A taxi from the airport to the city center will be around NT$1200, maybe a bit more depending on traffic.

A quick crash course on taking a bus in Taipei. When you get up on the bus, you should be able to see a lighted up sign at the or word. means that you should pay your bus fare when you get up on the bus, while the other means that you should pay your bus fare when you get off the bus. Do note that it is possible that you have to pay the bus driver twice as the sign switches halfway through your journey, which will happen if you take this bus 260. If you're paying cash, then this doesn't apply. :) Do note that you will be able to pay the bus fare using the EasyCard. The journey to Yang Ming Shan should take less than an hour.

Taxi

Taxis from airport to city cost NT$1200-1400 (with 50% surcharge).
Taxis from city to airport cost just NT$1000.
Trips to airport are often negotiated in advance
Initial fare is NT$70
Carrying luggage incurs NT$10 fee

QWhat should I do to call a taxi?

AIn addition to taxi online service, please call the service hotline of Taiwan Taxi (55688 by cell phone) and our service personnel will dispatch taxi upon request.

Please have your (1) contact number (2) pickup location (3) destination information available and Taiwan Taxi will have taxi in your neighborhood dispatched by GPS with a safe, comfort, and promote service provided.

Hualien 花蓮 (Taroko Gorge 太魯閣, Zi Qiang Night Market 自強路夜市)

Taroko Gorge 太魯閣

Also known as “The Marble Gorge”, Taroko was formed through the erosion of marble by the path of the Liwu River over millions of years. Though once a major commercial source of marble, extraction of this resource is now limited in order to protect the delicate ecosystem of the canyon.

By the Train

Tze-Chiang Limited Express is the fastest class. However, there are some different types of Tze-Chiang Limited Express. Taroko Express (太魯閣號) and Puyuma Express, which are both Tze-Chiang Limited Express, are tilt train and takes about 2 hours to transport between Taipei and Hualien and costs NTD 440. Because Taroko Express and Puyuman Express will tilt in moving, you should book a seat in advance.

The mark for Puyuma Express is a red . The mark for Taroko Express is 2 green peaks.

The closest train station to the park entrance is Sincheng (新城). From there, there is the choice of a one way taxi ride from the station to Taroko for about NT$200 or a day tour costing about NT$2,000.

The Tour Taiwan (台灣好行) Taroko Bus picks up and drops off at both Singcheng (新城) station and Hualien station.

It costs NT$250 for a 1-day unlimited use pass or NT$400 for a 2-day pass (which can only be purchased in Hualien and not on the bus), single fares between stops are cheap but you need the exact change.

Ticket service counters
- Hualien Bus Terminal:  100 Guolian 1st Road (turn left and walk straight after exiting Hualien railway station. You will see a prominent orange building)
- Hualien Visitor Info Center: 106, Guolian 1st Road (turn right and walk straight after exiting Hualien railway station) Opening hours: 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Note: Before touring Taroko, it is good to check the trail conditions either online (http://www.taroko.gov.tw/English/) or with the bus driver. Sometimes, certain trails may be closed due to reasons such as maintenance or hazardous damage from typhoons. Having this information will help you plan your day better.
